Pathogen Genomic Surveillance: Implications for Antimicrobial Resistance Containment

Pathogen Genomic Surveillance: Implications for Antimicrobial Resistance Containment

Session Lead: Kadir Abdella, Jimma University Institute of Health
Session Title: Pathogen Genomic Surveillance of Bacterial Colonization: Implication for Antimicrobial Resistance Containment

Brief Description: AMR is a mircoorganism’s acquired or inherited resistance to drugs/treatments and is one of the world’s biggest health threats. In Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 21.4 deaths per 100,000 are attributable to AMR. The main challenges in Ethiopia are surveillance and the focus primarily on isolated clinical infections. Pathogen genomic surveillance is poised to solve these major challenges for better yields in detection and identification, abundance of AMR genes and mutations, and facilitate the detection of emerging AMR strains.

PowerPoint available: Pathogen Genomic Surveillance Presentation (PDF). If you have any questions about the session, please email Lea Liekefedt.

Viral Genomics Surveillance in Ethiopia: Guanine Project

Session Lead: Atsbeha Gebreegziabxier, Integrated Pathogen Genomics and Bioinformatics Facility, EPHI

Session Discussion:

Atsbeha provided an overview of Ethiopia’s Genomics Surveillance projects and noted the absence of viral genomics surveillance as a critical missing link in the larger public health system. Accurate and timely viral genomics surveillance will allow us to better prepare ourselves for viral outbreaks and to prepare vaccines for these situations.

Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in the Rift Valley

Session Lead: Assistant Professor of Microbial Genomics Ketema Tafess Tulu (PhD)

Session Discussion:

Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death from a single infectious agent and kills almost twice as much as HIV/AIDS. Despite many interventions and new technologies for diagnostics and treatment, TB still remains a major public health challenge.

Outbreak of Cutaneous leishmaniasis: A New Focus in The Somale Region of Ethiopia

Session Lead: Adugna Abera (MSc), Ethiopian Public Health Institute

Session Discussion:

Adugna discusses the prevalence and epidemiology of Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in the Somale Region in Ethiopia. In August 2023, the EPHI received a higher number of reported CL cases in a lowland area in the east of the Somale region.
