Partner Institution: Bahir Dar University
PhD Programme: Laboratory
Enrolled University: Bahir Dar University
Mr. Chalachew Genet (MSc, PhD fellow at Bahir Dar University), is energetic and passionate researcher in the area of infectious disease immunology, epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance. Mr. Chalachew received his MSc in Medical Microbiology in Jimma University, Ethiopia and worked as full time academic staff in two public universities before he joined Bahir Dar University where he is working since 2018. Besides teaching-learning and community service, he has been discharging different administrative services in different universities including as dean of College of Medicine and Health Sciences (Samara University, Ethiopia) and department head of Medical Laboratory Sciences (Debre Tabor University, Ethiopia). He has authored and co-authored more than 20 articles at national and international peer reviewed journals as well as co-supervised and examined Medical Microbiology MSc students.
Mr. Chalachew is one of EpiGen-Ethiopia in-country PhD students. His PhD research is on genomic diversity, transmission dynamics and antimicrobial resistance of emerging Enterobacteriaceae specially focusing on Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli which are identified as critical pathogens by World Health Organization for research and antibiotic development among others as well as an emerging multidrug resistant superbugs even to carbapenem drugs, the last resort to treat Gram negative bacterial infections. His work will identify the genomic diversity of these bacteria and the transmission dynamics of Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and carbapenemase producing isolates among human, animal and hospital environments. Mr. Chalachew’s work will also identify the presence of clonal spread of different carbapenemase and ESBL coding genes in Northwest part of Ethiopia.
