Dr. Yared Merid Asfaw

  • Assistant Professor Medical Microbiology, Hawassa University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Dr. Merid is a Medical Microbiologist (Ph.D.) holding the position of Assistant Professor at Hawassa University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences in Hawassa, Ethiopia. In his time at Hawassa University, Dr. Merid has led the Microbiology department, mentored, and advised many postgraduate students, coordinated the Clinical Research Network between Hawassa University and the Armauer Hansen Research Institute, and established the SARS-CoV-2 Laboratory (P2 Lab).

Prior to his current position, Merid served as a team leader and acting head for the Center for Health Research and Laboratory at the Southern Region Health Bureau in Ethiopia. In this role, he successfully coordinated laboratory-based epidemic prevention and control activities and enhanced the region's laboratory services. Additionally, Merid served as Secretary for the Regional Ethical Review Committee. His experience also includes top-level management responsibilities.

Dr. Merid’s research expertise lies in the fields of tuberculosis, meningitis, SARS-CoV-2, antimicrobial resistance, and other microbiology topics. Through his research endeavors, he actively addresses community health challenges, seeking to generate actionable insights that can positively impact health program planners and policymakers.
