Dr. Geremew Tasew Guma is an Infection Biologist/Immunologist who was trained as medical lab technician at the former National Health Research Institute, Addis Ababa, and Medical Lab technologist (BSC) at former Jimma Institute of Helath sciences (1999), Jimma, Ethiopia. He obtained his Licentiate degree (MSc.) in Infection Biology from Karolinska institute (2010), Stockholm, Sweden, and obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Lubeck (2018), Lubeck, Germany in human biology/innate immuology with Magna Cuma laude rank.
He is currecntly at a Lead Researcher position and Director of Director for Malaria & Neglected Tropical Diseases Research Directorate, Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI). He received the Tore Godal Gold Medal Prize award winner of the year 2010 for his excellence in biomedical research, three consecutive Global health Travel award for young Researchers from 2008 to 2010, and UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO/TDR training grant award in 2006. He also received four grant awards as co-applicant from (EDCTP-3 2023, EDCTP 2021, NIH 2020, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology 2017) and two grants as main applicant (Federal Ministry of Science and Technology 2013 and World Health organization (WHO, 2009).
He authored and coauthored over 67 publications on peer reviewed journals and supervised over 12 postgraduate students from different universities for their research to fulfill their postgraduate thesis requirement. He has more than two decades of research experiences and broadly interested in infectious diseases research, program evaluation, survey and surveillance with particular emphasis on Malaria, bacterial infections, neglected tropical diseases such Leishmansis, Soil Transmitted Helminths /Schistosomiasis, Zoonotic diseases, emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. He is very much interested to lead programs and research activities mainly focusing on the study of Diseases epidemiology, immunology of infectious diseases, evaluation of diagnostic methods, infectious diseases elimination and control programs; and strengthening antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance in human, animal and environment as a sense of its containment in one health platform.
