Muhammed Ahmed commenced his academic journey after obtaining a bachelor's degree in public health from the University of Gondar in 2008. A few years later, he returned to Jimma University to pursue a Master's degree in epidemiology, which he completed in 2014. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student in Epidemiology at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD).

His research focuses on enhancing the Ethiopian Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system through a One Health approach, aiming to establish a comprehensive disease surveillance framework in Ethiopia and Eastern Africa. This includes the digitalization of One Health surveillance by exploring and integrating data collected from animals and the environment. Such efforts will pave the way for the first meta-analyses of aggregated datasets related to One Health, providing crucial insights for policymakers regarding the future challenges posed by environmental changes in human and animal health.

With over fifteen years of experience in public health within the Ethiopian healthcare system, he has held various positions, advancing from an expert role to the head of the Zonal Health Office in the Southern Ethiopia Regional State. Since 2018, he has served as the Director of the National Public Health Training Program at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, where his responsibilities include conducting public health research, designing health workforce capacity development initiatives, writing research grants, and delivering training on DHIS2 data management.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he spearheaded emergency workforce development and contributed to various COVID-19 research projects, focusing on long-term physical and mental sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 Syndrome) as well as being part of a technical workgroup assessing prognostic factors and outcomes of COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia. He has authored over ten scientific research papers published in peer-reviewed journals, concentrating on topics such as tuberculosis, HIV, COVID-19, and ongoing professional development among health professionals.
