Eleni Kidane Abera
Partner Institution: Ethiopian Public Health Institute
PhD Programme: Molecular Epidemiology
Enrolled University: Heinrich-Heine University Dusseldorf
Eleni earned her M.Sc. in Biology with a specialization in Applied Biology from Haramaya University. Her academic training in microbiology, genetics, molecular biology, and immunology has provided her with a robust foundation for her research activities. Presently, she serves as a researcher at the Infectious Diseases Research Directorate of the Ethiopia Public Health Institute, where she is involved in studies related to HIV and other viral infections. Over the past ten years, she has participated in various surveillance initiatives that utilize advanced laboratory techniques, acquiring significant knowledge. Notable projects include sequencing viral genomes to detect drug resistance mutations and treatment failures associated with HIV-1, Hepatitis, and others. Her research interest is focused on infectious diseases, particularly viral and bacterial infections by identifying novel viral genes for preventing the emergence of drug-resistant strains, and to establish surveillance system for monitoring antimicrobial resistance and disease outbreaks. Currently, she is a PhD student as part of EpiGen Ethiopia Project.
