Wastewater sequencing training strenghtens technical skills
Girma Berhanu from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute attended wastewater sequencing training by the ODIN Wastewater Surveillance Project in September 2025 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
“Participating in the training has significantly enhanced my ongoing wastewater-based surveillance efforts, particularly in the context of wastewater sequencing for COVID-19 and MPOX,” said Girma. “Through this training, I have gained a deeper understanding of advanced sequencing techniques, bioinformatics analysis, and data interpretation methods relevant to detecting and monitoring MPOX in wastewater samples. This experience has enabled me to refine sample collection and processing protocols, improve the accuracy of viral detection, and better analyse sequencing data to identify emerging variants.
“Furthermore, the training has fostered valuable collaborations and knowledge-sharing with experts in the field, which has been instrumental in troubleshooting technical challenges and staying updated on the latest methodologies. Overall, this capacity-building training has strengthened my technical skills and scientific insights, directly contributing to the leverage of my current skills on wastewater-based mpox surveillance and others.”
